Loganville Homeowners: Storm Preparedness

Georgia has officially hit the Spring Season, and with that comes the Spring Storms. Yes we get the normal rain storms, but we are talking about the huge thunderstorms that seem to come through this time of year. So Arrow Insurance has put together some Storm Preparedness Tips for you going into this Spring Season.

Before A Storm Hits:

​You’re watching the news and the weatherman is saying a storm is coming through soon. This is when you want to go ahead and get your home ready. Here’s a few tips before it hits: 

• Charge your cell phone
  
• Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed; frozen foods will keep for 2-3 days in a well stocked freezer
  
• Have some candles and/or flashlights ready in case the power goes out
  
• Disconnect any appliances that automatically restart (oven, refrigerators, freezers, washer, dryers) this helps not overload your system if the power does go out when it comes back on and will help avoid a potential fire hazard
  
• Have an emergency supply kit stocked, enough to get you and your family through 3 days without electricity or running water (filling up your bathtub with water is another option)

Now that you are all set for the storm, you now have to ride it out. You and your family’s safety is the utmost important.

• Stay alert and listen to the National Weather Service for any possible alerts, watches or warnings
• Stay inside
• Stay away from windows, doors and any electrical outlets and water. 

N​ow we do live in an area that is prone to tornadoes, they can hit fast and sometimes without warning, here are some tips to keep safe:
​

• Identify a place in your house that make sure everyone in your house knows where to go if there is ever a tornado warning, this should be a small room towards the center of your home on the lowest level with no windows; a basement, bathroom, hallway
• If it needs to be a bathroom, get in the tub with a mattress or cushions over your head
• Never try to outrun a tornado in your vehicle
• If you are home, keep a pair of tennis shoes nearby in case you have to rush to your safe spot. This will help if your home is hit and you have broken glass on the ground.

One last thing to do is to make sure you have the right amount of coverage on your home and your belongings before that storm hits. A simple conversation with your local insurance agent can satisfy that. This will ensure that if something was to ever happen, the last thing you have to worry about is how you are going to replace/fix anything that happens during a storm.
