It’s no secret that breed discrimination is still a thing in our society, even tho there are tons of advocates for them and more and more people are starting to rethink their stance. That includes insurance companies as well. There are quite a few insurance companies that still do not allow certain dog breeds. That is starting to change as some companies are loosening their restrictions. Some even allow them with a “Good Citizen Certificate”. What are the most common banned dog breeds?
These dogs are still the top 5 most common dog breeds you will see banned by some insurance companies. But did you know that there are some other breeds that are banned that you wouldn’t think are, including:
Why do home insurance companies ban certain dog breeds?Great question! First, let me say this, it is not because the companies just don’t like that dog breed. The reason some companies ban these breeds is simply because of the liability claims related to dog bites. We all joke and say that little dogs like Chihuahuas, are quicker to bite than most of the dogs listed above, but they also could not cause the amount of damage to a person with their bite than these dogs do. Dog bite liability claims have increased 163% since 2003, in 2020 there were $853.7 million dollars in claims paid out just for dog bites. While you can find companies that will exclude dog liability from your homeowners insurance with these breeds, most are simply just not allowing them at all. Personally, Arrow Insurance loves all doggos, but we can not change the insurers we represent underwriting guidelines. We can however advise you on which companies do and do not have a breed restriction list. How do I know if my home insurance company has a banned breed list?Call your insurance agent and find out. They will know first hand if the company you have does.
